WELCOME!
We are pleased to announce:
Under the sponsorship of IMEA, the Indiana Jazz Educators will once again sponsor the
All-State Jazz Band and Combo for Indiana’s outstanding high school jazz musicians.
The guest conductor for this year’s Big Band will be Doug Beach, director of Jazz
Studies at Elmhurst College and a leading composer/arranger for Kendor Music.
The Combo will be directed by Harry Miedema, Director of Jazz Studies at the
University of Indianapolis.
The All-State Jazz Concert will take place on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 2:30 PM in the
Allen County Public Library in conjunction with the IMEA Convention. Please note that
there is NO conflict with the Purdue Jazz Festival this year! Auditions will take place
October 31 – November 3, 2011. We hope that you will find this site to be a useful
source of information regarding the All-State Jazz Ensemble and other issues concerning
the jazz community in Indiana.

Information for Directors
Indiana All-State Jazz Band/Combo:
Friday, January 20, 2012
2:30 PM
Allen County Public Library
Guest Conductors:
Doug Beach – All-State Jazz Band
Harry Miedema – All-State Jazz Combo
Auditions:
October 31 – November 3, 2011
Important Requirements:
In order for a student to audition for one of the Indiana All-State Jazz Groups, the
student’s director must hold a current membership in IMEA/MENC. IMEA has been
underwriting the expenses of the All-State Jazz Band in recent years, so requiring jazz
directors to join IMEA allows us to be consistent with all of the other all-state groups
taking place during the annual state convention. You will need to provide your MENC
membership number in order for your students to audition. Simply go to the IMEA
website (www.imeamusic.org) in order to join IMEA/MENC.
Rehearsals:
The rehearsals for the All-State Jazz ensembles will take place on the campus of Indiana
University – Purdue University at Fort Wayne during the IMEA convention on January
18 – 20, 2012. Housing will be provided at the Holiday Inn at the Coliseum. There will
be a fee for housing/meals/conductor expenses. IMEA provides the rehearsal space and
the performance room rental.
Audition Times:
Auditions for the All-State Jazz Band/Combo will take place at ten audition sites around
the state on October 31 – November 3, 2011. CLICK HERE for audition sites
and contact information. Directors may choose the site that is most convenient. Each
audition will take approximately 15 minutes. Directors should contact the audition host
by October 24, 2011 to get audition times for their students. The auditions will be recorded at the site, and the student is expected to provide a recordable CD marked with his/her name, school, and instrument on the CD. Each student should also bring a $10 audition fee and turn it in along with his/her audition form. Please make all checks payable to: IMEA. Write “All-State Jazz” in the memo line. CLICK HERE to download the audition form.
Audition Materials:
We will be using Jim Snidero’s Jazz Conception series as our audition materials for horn
players. The Jazz Conception etude books with CD’s are available from Jamey
Aebersold (www.jazzbooks.com) or from J.W. Pepper (www.jwpepper.com) and will
make a nice addition to your school jazz library.
Rhythm section excerpts will be selected from the Rhythm Section/Workshop for Jazz
Directors books published by Alfred Publishing Company. These books are also
available from Jamey Aebersold (www.jazzbooks.com) or J.W. Pepper
Students auditioning for the All-State Jazz Band/Combo will also be asked to improvise
on a Bb or F blues and to sight-read.
If any schools have financial concerns with purchasing these books, feel free to contact
Kevin Klee, All-State Jazz Coordinator, for help in securing the necessary materials.

Information for Students
Audition Information:
Each audition will take approximately 15 minutes. All directors should contact the host site by October 24, 2011 to get audition times for their students. The auditions will be digitally recorded at the site, and the student is expected to provide a recordable CD marked with his/her name, school, and instrument on the CD. Each student should also bring a $10 audition fee and turn it in along with his/her All-State Jazz Application. Please make all checks payable to: IMEA.
Audition Materials for Saxophones, Trumpets, and Trombones:
1)Play a full range chromatic scale slurred up and down to demonstrate your range. Sustain the top note as a whole note before starting back down.
2)Prepare the etude “Friends” from the Jim Snidero Jazz Conception series. It will be preferable for you to perform it along with the play-along CD (with only the rhythm section speaker audible.) Please bring the CD along to your audition. These etude books would make a wonderful addition to any high school library and can be ordered from J. W. Pepper (www.jwpepper.com) or Jamey Aebersold (www.jazzbooks.com). Students are highly encouraged to include an improvised blues solo. You can bring your own play-along CD or use the one provided at the audition site for F and Bb blues. We recommend playing three to four choruses.
3)Finally, students will be asked to sight-read a 16 measure example.
4)Students who specialize in lead trumpet, baritone sax, or bass trombone should perform an additional excerpt of their choice which showcases their specialty playing
Audition Materials for Rhythm Section Players:
Your material will come from the Rhythm Section/Workshop series published by Alfred. Individual books/CD’s for piano, guitar, bass, and drums are available from J. W. Pepper (www.jwpepper.com) or Jamey Aebersold (www.jazzbooks.com).
1)Perform Shuff ‘Nuff (play 3 choruses and take a solo yourself on the 2nd chorus), Brisa (play 3 choruses), and Granite (play 3 choruses and take a solo yourself on the 2nd chorus). Please bring the CD to your audition, and the proctor will have the stereo set so that you can turn off the track with your instrument. These books provide notated parts just for your instrument; however, you should feel free to improvise your own drum beat, bass line, and comping pattern based on the given examples.
2)Students are highly encouraged to include an improvised blues solo. You can bring your own play-along CD or use the one provided at the audition site for F or Bb blues. We recommend playing three to four choruses. Drummers will be asked to alternate 4 bars of time at a medium fast swing tempo with four bars of solo. Repeat this pattern four times.
3) Finally, students will be asked to sight-read a 16 measure example.
Good luck! We look forward to hearing from you!
